NAPLES, Fla ( February 5, 2010) – WilsonMiller provided ecological and lead permitting services through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the Panther Passage Conservation Bank, a 4,009-acre habitat conservation bank located in Hendry County, Florida. Establishment of this Conservation Bank represents an excellent opportunity to conserve highly valuable biological resources.  The Conservation Bank will provide permanent conservation and management of vital habitat for the federally-listed Puma concolor coryi (Florida panther). Your project that you’ve been working on for nine months finally receives all necessary environmental permits and approvals, and construction commences, when a Florida panther—a federally listed species—appears on the project site.  Regulatory agencies stop all construction. Under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), no “take” of that species was anticipated under the permit, and the project is now in limbo until the issue is resolved. Project schedules and finances are compromised and everyone is pointing fingers. (more…)

WilsonMiller Professionals Earn Gopher Tortoise Authorized Agent Certification

The gopher tortoise was recently uplisted by the State of Florida to a threatened species, and the Florida Fish and WildlifeConservation Commission (FWC) has begun implementation of the Commission-approved Gopher Tortoise Management Plan. WilsonMiller is poised to respond to the changing FWC Gopher Tortoise permitting system and assist clients through all aspects of the new guidelines. As the FWC Gopher Tortoise permitting guidelines were revised, WilsonMiller’s Ecological and Water Resources professionals took the initiative to remain current with the new phases of the Gopher Tortoise permitting system. English Named to Florida State University’s Coastal and Marine Lab’s Newly Developed Board

Michael English, AICP, Vice President at WilsonMiller, has been appointed to FSU’s Newly Developed Coastal and Marine Laboratory’s Board of Trustees, further showcasing his dedication to the environment and sustainable growth. Trained as an urban anthropologist, Michael is currently Vice President for Community and Regional Planning at WilsonMiller, a Florida-based multidisciplinary consulting firm, for which he has directed many significant urban planning, redevelopment, and master planning projects. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, a Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology, and holds a B.A. degree from Florida State University and M.A. from the University of South Florida.

He has extensive expertise in historic preservation, transit planning, sustainable growth policy planning, real estate development, eminent domain litigation, and public policy. His professional commitment to improving urban environments has led him to investigate the connections between land use, transportation, and the natural environment. His interest in the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory and its critical research date to his youth spent in the Gulf of Mexico and college-related experiences on Apalachicola Bay. Spanning both the public- and private-sectors, his career includes several years as an award-winning urban-infill land developer, and appointments as Associate Director of the Florida Center for Urban Design & Research and Associate Professor at the University of South Florida (Tampa) School of Architecture.

The mission of the Florida State University Coastal & Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) is to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research focused on the coastal and marine ecosystems of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, with a focus on solving the ecological problems faced by the region by providing the scientific underpinnings for informed policy decisions.
